Knott Not In Favour Of Centuries

Tilford hosted Lindford on Sunday in blazing sunshine and ultimately ran out comfortable winners, but were made to work hard for the victory. Tilford batted first and the openers  had to contend with a lively opening attack, but saw the new ball off and batted sensibly to put on 52 for the first wicket. This brought together Guy Wilson and Huw Town Jones, who gradually accelerated through the gears, playing shots all around the ground, with some exceptional driving the feature. Lindford fielded competitively and stuck to their task but despite ringing the bowling changes could not break the partnership. After 27 overs, captain Knott decided a score of 218 was enough to declare on, leaving both batsmen not out in the 90s. The unbroken partnership had yielded 166.

In response, Lindford had a similar start with the opening pair of Ellen and Henderson batting circumspectly against good bowling with the new ball seaming around. Ramesar in particular bowled economically, reeling off 5 maidens in his first 8 overs. It was he that eventually made the breakthrough, but it took an exceptional catch from Grogut in the gulley to dismiss Henderson.
This brought Keddle to the wicket, who batted beautifully, striking the ball cleanly until mistiming one to be caught at long on for an excellent 27.

By this time, Cook had been introduced to the attack and on a responsive pitch gave a master class in leg spin, picking up three wickets, including two bowled by googlies which completely flummoxed the victims. Wickets continued to fall, but to Lindford’s credit they continued to attack, ultimately leaving Hall stranded on 23 not out. Knott bowled the most miserly of spells, picking up 4 for 14 with his deceptive seamers. Special mention must go to young Cameron Stevenson though, who not only fielded with much promise taking a difficult catch , but also picked up his first wicket in senior cricket, which signalled the end of the game.

A match played in just the right spirit and a pleasure to welcome back a number of old I’Anson foes to Tilford Green.
